The Matter
Non-linear
Manufacturing
Traditional manufacturing is a straight line from raw material to a finished, identical product. Noma is recursive — every material, every maker, every decision folds back into the whole.
The Approach
Adaptive Production
We replace the "assembly line" with "Mastery Cells" — specialized units of elite craftsmen who adjust the manufacturing process in real-time to suit the specific characteristics of a gemstone, a piece of leather, or a block of wood.
Material-First Logic
In our shops, the material dictates the design. We do not force a natural stone into a pre-set mold; we innovate the mold to celebrate the stone's unique inclusions and physical truth.
The Feedback Loop
Every stage of production is an opportunity for innovation. Because our teams are non-linear, a discovery made during the polishing of a jewel can immediately inform the design of the next series.
First Principles
Core Values
Integrity of the Source
A clear Origin Story. Deep respect for the environments and communities that provide our raw materials.
The 10,000-Hour Standard
Mastery above speed. We invest in the long-term well-being of our artisans, ensuring skills are passed down for generations.
Elegant Scalability
Hand-made does not mean small. Intelligent organizational structures bring the beauty of the workshop to the entire world.
Timelessness
Every Noma object is designed to be durable, repairable, and aesthetically relevant for decades. We do not manufacture for the landfill.
The Mastery Cell
"The material is not a canvas. It is a collaborator. Our work begins where the industrial process ends — in the space that demands a human decision."
Each Mastery Cell is a sovereign unit. The cell lead — always a master with a minimum of fifteen years in their discipline — makes real-time decisions that no production manual could anticipate. It is this latitude, structured by deep expertise, that makes every Noma object unrepeatable.
The People
See the work →Keiko Tanaka
Master Ceramicist
Shigaraki, Japan · 22y mastery
Keiko trained under Rakuichimaru Tanaka — the fourteenth generation of the Raku lineage — before establishing her own kiln in Shigaraki. Her work is characterized by an extreme patience with material: she fires no more than twice per year, each session lasting six days. Her partnership with Noma began in 2021 when we commissioned the Wabi Tea Set; since then she has led the ceramics programme across both streams.
Rafael Santos
Master Cabinetmaker
Porto, Portugal · 31y mastery
Rafael's family has operated the same workshop in Porto since 1963. He learned from his father, who learned from his. He works with a team of six — all trained in-house over a minimum of five years. His principle is simple: if a piece cannot be repaired in a hundred years, it should not be built. His Ebony Writing Desk for the Originality House earned a commendation from the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga.
Amara Diallo
Master Goldsmith
Dakar, Senegal · 18y mastery
Amara is part of the griotte tradition of Senegalese metalworking — a craft lineage that predates colonialism and carries its own language of form. She trained in Dakar and refined her setting technique with a Swiss firm in Biel before returning. Her work is the bridge between ancestral West African goldsmithing and the precision requirements of contemporary fine jewelry. The Tourmaline Collar Necklace is entirely her work, from stone selection to final polish.
Thomas Hauer
Master Glassblower
Bohemia, Czech Republic · 26y mastery
Thomas trained in the Nový Bor district of northern Bohemia — the historical center of European crystal. His speciality is free-blown form: he works without molds, relying entirely on breath, gravity, and the predictability of heat. He led the eleven-day firing sequence for the Lalique Vessel Series. He maintains that a piece of crystal is only finished when it has been held in the light.
Li Wei
Master Lapidary
Ruili, Yunnan, China · 20y mastery
Li Wei operates at the intersection of the gem trade and material science. Based in Ruili — the principal jadeite trading hub on the China-Myanmar border — he grades and acquires stones for our Material Sourcing stream. His singular skill is reading mineral structure: he can identify fissure patterns invisible to the naked eye that will affect a stone's behavior under long-term stress. He designed the mineral selection protocol for the Singapore Wall Installation.
